Sometimes the most delightful cards come from the least expected color pairings—and this sweet card is proof! At first glance, you might not immediately think to pair soft pink florals with a cool, almost breezy blue and muted gray background. But that’s exactly what makes it so eye-catching.
Instead of the usual warm-toned floral backdrop, the cool hues create a calm, fresh canvas that lets the pink flower gently pop without shouting for attention. It’s a little like wearing your favorite spring dress with a denim jacket—unexpected, but perfectly balanced.
The subtle blending of soft gray hexagons behind the crisp white hexagon adds depth without overwhelming the design. And that stitched shape? It frames the flower just enough to say, “Hey, look at me,” while still playing nicely with the rest of the card.
What really makes unusual color choices work is confidence. When you let one element take the spotlight (like that soft pink bloom), the surrounding colors can take on more supportive, even surprising roles. Cool tones can ground warm ones. Muted shades can soften bold designs. And suddenly, what felt like an odd pairing becomes something uniquely beautiful.
So next time you reach for your go-to color combo, pause for just a second… and swap one shade for something unexpected. You might just create your new favorite look.
To Create This Card:
- Use the Octagon stencil from the Stencil Deck by Lisa Horton Crafts to stencil a background onto a white card panel using gray ink. I used Agnes Grey in the Picked by Paula Matt Blending Ink collection. Cut the inked panel to 4 x 5 1/4 inches.
- Matt the inked panel onto a 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″ panel of white card stock that has been inked around the edges with blue ink. Add the panels to an A2 card base made with white card stock.
- Die cut an octagon using masking paper and lightly ink a blue halo around the mask on the card front. I used Fundamentals Nested Octagon dies by Lisa Horton Crafts.
- Ink a floral image using rose colored ink onto white card stock and die cut using an Octagon die. Adhere to the card front using foam tape.
- Stamp the sentiment onto the card front using blue ink.
- Finish by adding Diamond Stickles to the flower center.
